All driving instructors have to go through a training program to qualify to become a driving instructor. To qualify to become a driving instructor you have to complete 3 tests/exams. The first test (Part 1) is similar to the driver theory test but includes instructional questions and has a very high pass mark. The second test (Part 2) is driving ability covering all aspects of driving including all of the maneuvers and motorway driving. After completing the 2nd exam/test, candidates are allowed to apply for a trainee license to practice on students for the 3rd test (Part 3)

Trainee driving instructors are given a red/pink badge in the shape of a triangle.
After completing Part 3 Driving Instructors are given a green hexagonal badge

Addition Tests/Checks
At regular intervals the DSA carry out checks on driving instructors to ensure that there teaching within their lessons is satisfactory. These are known as Check Test’s, a senior examiner then sits in on one of the lessons and grades the instructor from 1 to 6. 1 to 3 is a fail and 4 to 6 is a pass. If an instructor consistently has fail grades then their badge and ability to instruct will be removed.

It is an offence for someone to instruct, give lessons and obtain money without being a qualified driving instructor.
